Implementing Game Logic and State Management in Python

The Project

The Juego-final project, led by Castanheira, serves as a comprehensive platform for managing game-based application logic. As the project reaches its final stages, the focus has shifted toward refining the core execution flow and ensuring robust state management to handle complex game interactions.

The Challenge

Building a game engine requires a predictable way to handle state transitions. In our early iterations, managing game states through scattered conditional logic made the codebase difficult to maintain. We needed a more structured approach to represent the lifecycle of the application.

Our Approach

To standardize our workflow, we implemented a state machine pattern. This allows us to define distinct states for the game—such as initializing, running, and paused—and control the transitions between them explicitly.

Defining States

Using Python, we can model our states as discrete objects, ensuring that the game only processes valid transitions:

class GameState:
    def execute(self):
        raise NotImplementedError

class RunningState(GameState):
    def execute(self):
        # Handle game loop logic
        print("Game is currently running")

class StateManager:
    def __init__(self):
        self.current_state = None

    def change_state(self, new_state):
        self.current_state = new_state

Managing Transitions

By centralizing these transitions, we avoid "spaghetti code" where one function checks too many external flags. The state machine pattern acts as a traffic controller, ensuring the game flow remains linear and debuggable.

Key Takeaway

When building complex systems like game engines, avoid checking global boolean flags throughout your code. Instead, implement a state machine to encapsulate behavior. Start by identifying your three most critical states, define the transitions between them, and migrate your logic into those containers for a cleaner, more modular architecture.
